- To start the 1910 season, Walter John-
- son had earned the honor of pitching on
- opening day. President William Howard
- Taft threw out the first ball. The cere-
- mony marks the first time a president
- had ever made the toss.
-
- Walter became the Washington
- Senators' opening-day pitcher 14 times.
- He collected the autographed "first"
- baseballs of Presidents Taft, Woodrow
- Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin
- Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. After
- Walter died, the entire collection was
- presented to the National Baseball Hall
- of Fame and Museum by his son.
